Documents such as KCSE or KCPE are significant in our lives, and losing them can be a daunting experience. Your certificates are a pathway to one’s academic and professional journey; losing them can cost you many opportunities. The KNEC implemented a rule in 2009 to replace lost certificates with a condition that replacement can be done only once.

Here is a simple guide to follow to replace your lost or damaged certificate
- Fill in the KNEC certificate replacement form.
This form can be downloaded from the KNEC website, or you can visit the KNEC Archives and Records offices and request the form.
Log in to the official KNEC website, click the certificate replacement forms link, and download the form. Fill in the required data and attach the supporting testimonials such as:
- The results slip or a copy of the certificate, if available
- Recommendation letter from school or leaving certificate
- An identification card or Birth certificate
- Police abstract indicating the loss
- Affidavit
- Pay the processing Fee
To process your application on the lost or damaged certificate, you must pay Ksh. 5800, which is inclusive of VAT. This money can be deposited at either of the following banks.
- Equity
- National Bank of Kenya
- Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB)
- Co-operative Bank of Kenya.
Request a KNEC bank slip from the banks above, deposit the money and attach it to your application form to prove your payments.
- Submit Your application
Before submitting your application form, ensure that the details provided are accurate. You should submit your documents physically addressing them to the Council Secretary of Kenya National Examination Council. The KNEC address is 73598-00200 Nairobi.
- Waiting Period
After submitting your application to replace your certificates, you will wait 60 working days to collect your certificate. Similarly, the certificates should be collected when your document arrives at the KNEC office premises. You will be required to show your identification card, and if they are minors, they should be accompanied by their parents or guardians with their birth certificates and original ID.
You can also track the status of your application through the KNEC Query Management information system.
Please take note that when you request a replacement of your certificates, you should be able to collect them within two years, failure to which your document will be disposed of without notification.
