Mastering the IELTS: Tips for Success

International English Language Testing System IELTS is recognized worldwide as the test that examines your English language proficiency in Writing, listening, speaking, and reading.  Achieving good band scores in these exams can open so many opportunities for you, from enhancing your career, and migrating to English-speaking countries to studying abroad.  If you are looking to perform well in the IELTS exam here is a list of tips and plans to assist you.

1. Understand and familiarize yourself with the Format:  You should be familiar with the format of the IELTS exam. Being aware and knowing what will be tested can enable you to plan your time well during the exam. You should know that IELTS consists of Listening, Reading, Writing, and speaking. Each part has its format to answer its questions for instance listening you will be required to pay attention to the conversation and answer questions about the conversation. In reading you will read passages and answer questions relating to the passage. Writing you will be given a random topic and you will be required to write not less than 250 words. Speaking you will be asked personal questions and any random topic, you should be able to explain your answers effectively and with confidence.

2. Practice Regularly:  Create time to practice regularly, you should set aside some time daily to listen to audio clips, write essays on random topics, speak, and read texts. Practicing makes you perfect and builds your confidence during the exam.

3. Work on  Your Vocabulary:  Examiners will be keen on your vocabulary and therefore you should be able to develop your vocabulary by reading English books, articles, and newspapers. Ensure that you learn some new phrases daily and use them during your writing and speaking practices. Having a good command of vocabulary will enable you to express your ideas well. 

4. Develop your Grammar and Pronunciation:  Work on your pronunciation as well as your grammar and make sure that you adhere to the grammar rules and pronunciation. To improve your grammar you should listen to native speakers and do quite several grammar to understand the sentence structure and tone. Clear and precise pronunciation is vital for the Speaking part, so you should practice speaking with clarity and fluency.

5. Time Management: Using your time adequately is significant in the IELTS exam. Exercise completing your tasks in the speculated time range to prepare you to manage your time during the exams well. You can strategize yourself to start with questions that seem easier and later come back for those that seem tougher later.  

6. Mock Tests: To get well prepared you should take mock tests regularly to familiarize yourself with the exams. This will enable you to stimulate the exam environment and know the format of the exams. Additionally taking mocks will enable you to identify your strengths and weaknesses improving your progress over time. Take note of your performance and concentrate on areas where you still feel not well performed.

7. Seek Feedback: Console your tutors, and teachers and seek feedback on your writing, listening, reading, and speaking skills.  They will be able to tell you your areas of weaknesses and ways to improve your language skills. Take into consideration the feedback given and practice in those areas to achieve good performance.

8. Be Calm and Confident:  During your exam period, you should be able to be calm and confident. Read any given instructions carefully and tackle each question with a positive mindset. Take note that IELTS wants to examine your command of English proficiency and doesn’t do anything about your intelligence or what you are capable.
